Monetization Rejected? Here’s the Right Way to Appeal! | How to Write a YouTube Appeal

Receiving a YouTube monetization rejection can be disheartening, especially after a lot of hard work. However, if you believe the decision was a mistake, you have the option to appeal. A successful appeal requires a strategic and well-thought-out approach. Here's a guide on the right way to appeal, including how to create a compelling appeal video.

Step 1: Understand the Reason for Rejection

Before you do anything else, it is crucial to understand why your channel was rejected. YouTube's rejection email will specify the policy your channel violated. The most common reasons for rejection are:

  • Reused Content: This is when a significant portion of your channel's content is not original or lacks a sufficient level of creative transformation. This could be content from other creators, TV shows, or even your own content that is simply re-uploaded without added value.

  • Repetitive Content: This refers to content that is too similar to other videos on your channel, lacking a unique narrative, commentary, or educational value. Examples include identical introductions, repetitive sound effects, or videos that are just slightly altered versions of each other.

Carefully read the email and any related help articles to fully grasp the policy you are being accused of violating.

Step 2: Prepare Your Appeal

YouTube's primary method for appealing a monetization rejection is through a video. This gives you the opportunity to directly address the reviewers and show them why their decision was incorrect.

Before you record, do the following:

  • Do NOT delete any videos. Your channel will be reviewed in its current state. Deleting videos may make it seem like you are trying to hide something.

  • Create a script or outline. Plan exactly what you are going to say and show. This will ensure your video is concise, professional, and directly addresses the issue.

  • Review your channel as a whole. Look at your titles, descriptions, tags, and thumbnails. Do they accurately reflect your content? Are they misleading or spammy? Fix anything that violates the policies.

Step 3: Create a Strong Appeal Video

Your video is your chance to prove your content is original and adds value. Follow these guidelines to make it as effective as possible:

Video Requirements:

  • Include your channel URL: State your channel's URL in the first 30 seconds of the video.

  • Address the policies directly: Refer to the specific policy you were rejected for and provide examples of how your channel adheres to the guidelines. Do not make excuses or ask for forgiveness.

  • Show, don't just tell: This is the most critical part. Your video must provide visual examples of your creation process.

What to Show in Your Video:

  • Demonstrate your content creation process: Use screen-capture software to show how you create your videos from scratch. This is your chance to prove that your content is unique and required effort.

  • For "Reused Content":

    • Show raw footage, audio recordings, or original images.

    • Show your editing software (like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve) and walk through a project file.1 Highlight how you've edited clips, added voiceovers, and created a new narrative.

    • If you create animations, show your project files and the software you use.

    • If you are a music artist, show yourself creating the music in a digital audio workstation (DAW).

  • For "Repetitive Content":

    • Explain the differences between similar-looking videos.

    • Show how you create new and unique narratives for each video, even if they use similar source material.

    • For gaming channels, show the unique commentary and editing that makes your gameplay different from others.

  • Show your face or use a voiceover: Reviewers have noted that showing yourself on camera or providing a clear, engaging voiceover can significantly help your case, as it demonstrates that a human creator is behind the content.2

Step 4: Submit Your Appeal

Once your video is ready, follow these steps:

  1. Upload the video to your channel as unlisted. Do not make it public.

  2. Go to the Earn section in YouTube Studio.

  3. Click the "Start Appeal" button.

  4. Enter the URL of your unlisted appeal video.

  5. Submit your appeal.

You will typically receive a response within 14 days.

Important Notes

  • Timing is key: If you were notified that your channel is scheduled for suspension, you have 7 days to submit your appeal.3 If your channel has already been suspended, you have 21 days from the date of suspension to appeal.4

  • Be patient: The review process can take time. If your appeal is successful, your channel will be re-admitted to the YouTube Partner Program.5 If it is rejected, you will have to wait 30 or 90 days (depending on the number of rejections) to re-apply.

  • Stay professional: The tone of your video should be professional and respectful. Do not get emotional or aggressive. Your goal is to logically and visually prove your channel's originality.
