The government of India offers several "bima" (insurance) schemes to provide social security and financial protection to its citizens, especially those from vulnerable sections of society. Here's a look at some of the major schemes:

Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)

  • Type of Scheme: Life insurance.

  • Purpose: Provides a life insurance cover for death due to any reason.

  • Coverage: ₹2 lakh.

  • Eligibility: Individuals with a bank account in a participating bank or post office, aged between 18 and 50 years.

  • Premium: ₹436 per year, auto-debited from the subscriber's bank account.

  • Key Features: The policy is renewable annually, and the coverage period runs from June 1st to May 31st.

Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)

  • Type of Scheme: Accidental death and disability insurance.

  • Purpose: Provides accidental death and disability cover.

  • Coverage:

    • ₹2 lakh for accidental death or total and irrecoverable loss of both eyes, or loss of use of both hands or feet.

    • ₹1 lakh for total and irrecoverable loss of sight of one eye, or loss of use of one hand or one foot.

  • Eligibility: Individuals with a bank account in a participating bank or post office, aged between 18 and 70 years.

  • Premium: ₹20 per year, auto-debited from the subscriber's bank account.

  • Key Features: The policy is renewable annually, and the coverage period runs from June 1st to May 31st.

Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)

  • Type of Scheme: Health assurance.

  • Purpose: Provides free healthcare services to economically weaker sections of society.

  • Coverage: ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.

  • Eligibility: The scheme is based on the deprivation and occupational criteria of the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011. Beneficiaries are automatically included. There is no restriction on family size, age, or gender.

  • Key Features: It's the world's largest government-funded health assurance scheme. It provides cashless treatment at empanelled public and private hospitals across India. Pre-existing diseases are covered from day one.
